BCBA to RBA – Changes in Ontario

As of July 1, 2024, the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services has established the regulation of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) services in Ontario.

Previously, Behaviour Analysts were registered with the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board and held the Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) title. While the requirements for registration remain the same, Behaviour Analysts in Ontario are now required to register with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) and are given the credentials of Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA).

Why the change? The Behaviour Analyst Certification Board (BACB) ensures that any professional given the BCBA title has the necessary education, experience, and knowledge to supervise and deliver ABA therapy. However, the BACB certifies Behaviour Analysts in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. This makes it difficult to regulate ABA practices within each country. The College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) strictly operate in the province of Ontario allowing them to regulate ABA practices in the province.

Insurance

As RBAs are now registered under the College of Psychologists, we advise you to clarify with your private insurance providers about coverage for ABA services.
